7 Tips to Find the Best Items to Dropship [Plus 25 Example Ideas]

Thinking about getting into drop shipping?

Once you’ve made that big decision to start your own online store you might be thinking what’s the best items to dropship?

To be honest I could give a huge list of products to choose from but if you want to succeed in drop shipping the entire game is won and lost on picking the right product from the very beginning.

Let me repeat that one more time.

If you want to succeed in drop shipping the entire game is won and lost on picking the right product from the very beginning.

To do that you need to understand what makes a good product to pick in the first place.  To help you out I’m going to share 7 tips that are guiding my decision to find the best items to dropship.

7 Tips to Find the Best Items to Dropship

Below are the 7 tips I’m using to find the best product sell at my drop shipping store.  At the end of this article, I’m going to share 25 product examples to give you some ideas to choose from.

#1 Sell High Ticket Items

To start you want to sell high ticket items and stay away from low-cost items.  The problem with low-cost items is that you don’t earn much from them.

For example, if you’re selling a $20 product and you earn 20% of the sale you would make roughly $4.  That’s also beside the fact that you will likely have to run some ads to drive traffic to your site in the first place.

When you sell a high ticket product you earn the same percentage but overall you’ll earn more.  For example, if you’re selling a product for a $750 and you earn 20% of the sale you’ll take home $150.  On top of that, you won’t have to make nearly as many sales every month to start earning a decent income.

For example, if you make 30 sales per month you’ll earn roughly $4500 a month.  If you were only earning $4 a sale you would only earn $120 a month.

#2 Don’t Sell Products from Middle Men Suppliers

Next, you’ll want to avoid selling products from middlemen suppliers that charge a fee to sell products from them.

Side Note:  You should never have to pay a supplier to sell products

While sites like Doba and AliExpress let you have access to tons of different product they are usually not worth your time because the margins will be very small if not underpriced and very competitive.

The best suppliers, also known as the gold suppliers, never charge for you to sell their products and they will typically enforce MAP policies, also known as Minimum Advertised Prices.  This means the supplier will have a set minimum price you can charge and if you go below that price you’ll likely lose your supplier agreement.

#3 Just Because You Can Sell It Doesn’t Mean You Should

Which brings me to my next point, you don’t need to sell every product under the sun just because you can.  You don’t want to start the next Amazon, this is just a bad idea.

Amazon is a billion dollar company.  There is no way you’ll be able to compete at that level.

Rather you want to niche down your store to something a lot more specific.  Doing this will make your site more recognizable and different from other drop shipping stores.

#4 Stick With Low Competition Products

You’ll want to stick to selling products that have low competition.  With high competition products, you’ll be dealing with way too many people competing on the same products thus making it harder to stand out in the marketplace.

With low competition products, you’ll be able to carve your spot out in the market much faster and earn money faster.  There is no guarantee but it does increase your odds of success.

To help you better understand this let me give you an example.  Which product is more competitive, computer monitors or industrial lifting magnets?

If we do a search on Google Shopping for computer monitors we get this.

As you can see computer monitors are very competitive because there are 20 to 25+ stores selling almost any given monitor which would make it hard to compete in this market.

Now let’s look at industrial lifting magnets.

As you can see there are only a few stores selling this product which would make it much easier for you to get into this niche.

#5 The Product Should Be Evergreen

The product you select should also be an evergreen product as well.  This would be a product that would likely sell all year round. To help you best understand this l like to use Google Trends.

Let’s start with the example from above on lifting magnets.

Lifting magnets stay pretty steady throughout the year.  Sure there are some ups and downs but overall people are buying this product all year long.

Now let’s look at something like Halloween Costumes

As you can see with Holloween Costumes there is a huge spike from September to October but after that sales drop off big time.

#6 Their Should Be a Demand for the Product

You should also find a demand for the product as well.  If nobody wants to buy the product then you’re going to be fighting an uphill battle from the start.  So how do you do this?

To do this I like to use the Google Keyword Planner.

To do this simply input your keyword into the search bar.  In this case, I chose Industrial Lights.

As you can see there are at least 10,000 minimum monthly searches for this term which is the minimum amount you’ll want to have to start your drop shipping store.

#7 Go With Products You Already Use

Finally, the last tip is to go with a product you’ve already used or want to use.  The reason for this is simple when you already own the product it will be easier to answer questions when people call or email you about the product.

This can go a long way to helping secure deals and earn more income.  For example, if you own an iPhone and you were selling the Samsung Galaxy, how could you possibly tell anyone about it when you’ve never used it.

Owning the product gives you the first-hand experience to make you more confident in selling even just your first product.
